Our Flying Friends!
These are just SOME of the beautiful and diverse bat species located all around the world!
SO WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Megabats (Megachiroptera), also known as “fruit bats”, do not typically use echolocation. They rely on their improved sight to get around!
- Save for the Egyptian fruit bats, which produce echolocation with their nasal passages and tongue clicks rather than laryngeal echolocation.
They also have smaller ears and much larger eyes than the microbat.
Microbats (Microchiroptera) are rather tiny bats that rely on laryngeal echolocation in order to understand their surroundings. Their ears contain a tragus in order to direct ultrasound waves back into the ear canal, and are much larger than the ears of a megabat. Microbats also possess significantly smaller eyes.
