Common Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus)

Habitat: trees, caves, buildings, wells, and old mines

Diet: mammalian blood, specifically horses and cattle

Wingspan: 13-15in

Type: microbat

The common vampire bat is a microbat that lives in parts of Mexico, Central America, and South America, as well as a few Caribbean islands. Vampire bats have a very special way of obtaining their food. As their name suggests, they sink their teeth into their victims (preferably livestock) and lap up the blood with their tongues. Vampire bats can carry rabies, though they do not prey on humans, so don’t worry!
